But first, here’s something cool. Did you know sharks have been around for more than 400 million years? They’re one of the oldest animals in the ocean. Now let’s get started and draw it step by step.

Here’s an easy step by step tutorial that will help you create a simple and easy shark drawing.

Materials you’ll need

  • A piece of paper
  • An HB pencil
  • A dust-free eraser
  • A black sketch pen for outlines
  • Crayons or color pencils for coloring

Let’s get started!

Note: In each step, the new parts of the drawing are highlighted in orange, while the parts you’ve already drawn remain black. This makes it easier to see exactly what to draw next.

Step 1: Draw the shark’s main body shape

Simple curved oval shape drawn lightly to form the shark’s main body outline.

Start by drawing the main body shape of the shark. Use a smooth curved line to form a shape that looks like a sideways oval or a stretched teardrop. This shape does not need sharp corners. Keep your pencil lines light so you can erase or adjust them easily. This simple shape will help you build the rest of the shark.

Step 2: Draw the shark’s tail

Next, draw the shark’s tail at the back of the body. The tail has two curved points that spread outward. Draw one curve going up and another going down, then connect them to the body. Try to keep both sides balanced, but don’t worry if they’re not exactly the same. Simple curves work best here.

Step 3: Draw the shark’s fins

Now it’s time to add the fins to your shark. First, draw the top fin by making a small curved triangle on top of the body. Then add a side fin near the bottom of the body, pointing slightly backward. These fins should look soft and rounded, not sharp. Your shark outline should now clearly look like a fish shape.

Step 4: Draw the shark’s eye and mouth

Let’s give the shark a face. Draw a small circle near the front of the body for the eye. Keep it simple and neat. Below the eye, draw a curved line to form the mouth. You can make the curve slightly upward so your shark looks friendly instead of scary.

Step 4: Draw the shark’s teeth and details

Now add some details to complete the drawing. Inside the mouth, draw small zigzag lines to show the teeth. Don’t make them too big—short, simple triangles work well. You can also add a small dot or tiny circle inside the eye to make it look bright and lively. At this stage, your pencil drawing is finished. Well done!

Color your shark!

Now you can color your shark. Most sharks are gray or blue on top and lighter on the bottom, so you can use those colors if you like. Color the mouth red or pink and keep the teeth white. Use crayons or color pencils and fill in the colors evenly. Take your time and enjoy this part. Once you’ve done that, carefully trace over your final pencil lines using a black sketch pen.

You’re all done!

Great job! You’ve learned how to draw a shark step by step by breaking it into simple shapes and easy lines. With practice, your drawing will start to look smoother and more confident each time you try again. If you want, you can draw another shark next to it and change the expression or colors.
